Does Your Website Need a Redesign or a Careful Repair?

“The website feels old” is a starting observation. It is not yet a diagnosis.

Before proposing a redesign, I want to know what has stopped working. Can people understand the offer Can they find relevant work Does the contact form complete its job Can the owner update the page without breaking it

The answers may lead to a new website. They may also lead to a smaller, more focused repair.

Describe a real difficulty

Choose one task a visitor should be able to complete. For a service business, that might be finding a relevant project and sending an enquiry.

Try the task on a phone and a desktop. Record where the experience becomes unclear. A vague service heading, a missing project description and a broken form are different problems.

Do not begin by choosing a fashionable visual style. Begin by identifying what the current page fails to communicate or do.

Diagnose before you replace. Content: Does the offer make sense?. Structure: Can visitors find the page?. Function: Does the task complete?. Maintenance: Can the owner update it?

Separate content from structure

Suppose a fictional studio has beautiful project photographs but no explanation of its contribution. The page may need clearer case studies before it needs a different layout.

Now suppose the same studio has grown into three distinct services, while every enquiry route still refers to its original offer. That may require a structural change across navigation, pages and CMS fields.

For another business, the main issue could be maintenance. If updates are difficult, a new appearance without a workable editing process will reproduce the frustration.

Observe real users where possible. Ask them to complete a relevant task without guiding each click. Nielsen Norman Group's usability material is useful here: a test should show what people do, not merely collect opinions about colours.

Distinguish the evidence from your interpretation. “They could not locate the service page” is an observation. “We need an entirely new brand” is a proposed response that still needs justification.

Turn a concern into a useful brief. Task: Name a visitor goal. Observation: Record the difficulty. Response: Choose a proportionate scope. Review: Check the original problem

Make the investment answer the problem

A useful brief states the audience, the important tasks, the content that exists and the content that must be created. It also identifies constraints and how you will assess the result.

If a repair is appropriate, define its boundaries. Rewrite the project pages, fix the form or improve the navigation, then review whether the specific difficulty has improved.

If a redesign is appropriate, preserve what already works. Keep an inventory of useful pages, content, integrations and URLs before rebuilding.

My Webflow website work begins with this kind of conversation. I want the scope to follow the project rather than making every problem look like a reason to replace everything.

Bring a concrete example to the first discussion: the page that confuses customers, the update you cannot make or the enquiry that arrives without the information you need.

Tell me what is happening on your website. A clear description of the problem is already a better brief than a demand to make it more modern.
